Australia’s National Science Week is a nationwide celebration of science and technology. It’s held every August, this year from 9 – 17 August, bringing events for all levels of science lovers, including local, regional and national events, and some you can enjoy from the comfort of home.
Events take place across cities, towns, schools, libraries, museums, and online platforms, with topics from space and quantum physics to ecology, Indigenous knowledge, and medical innovation. There are DIY experiments, citizen science projects, virtual tours, quizzes, and interactive talks.
With more than 2o00 events planned around Australia by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres, the lists of events can be hard to navigate! But you can head to the main National Science Week website, enter your suburb or postcode, and then check out what’s happening!

Soapbox Science Brisbane 2025 is a free public engagement event to inspire new generations of women scientists, challenge perceptions of what a scientist does and looks like, and encourage the public and wider community to engage with novel science. The selected speakers are specialists in mathematics, molecular science, neuroscience, material science and nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, ecology, and genetics. - 12 Aug, Sydney Opera House: Hear music inspired by DNA, the code of life!
Join Mark Temple and ‘the biological exploding DNA sequence inevitable’ at the Sydney Opera House for an event where molecular biology meets modular synthesis, for a sonic exploration of DNA using motifs like CpG islands, telomeres or gene regions, with sequences edited and spliced to form musical structures including refrains, bridges, codas. - 13 Aug, Kaleide Theatre – RMIT University: The Science of Despicable Me 2
Enjoy a screening of Despicable Me 2, then join a Q&A session with RMIT scientists: discover the real-world physics behind the Minions’ outrageous stunts and gadgets, dive into the world of quantum mechanics, and learn how physics principles power the Minions’ chaotic adventures! - 16 Aug, Wa Museum Boola Bardip: Biggest Science Lab ever!
For one day only, explore maker spaces, drop-in zones, exhibitions and pop-up shows, plus listen in as experts share their knowledge. Dance along with some special prehistoric musical guests!
