Think Inc. moves online with Outside The Box: Jamie Metzl 26 April

Outside The Box

Previous Think Inc. events have brought leading science minds such as Jane Goodall, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Richard Dawkins in tour to Australia, speaking in a town hall or auditorium setting in a series of innovative, entertaining and educational evenings. some of which Science Illustrated has been pleased to support.

Now during the lockdown Think Inc is introducing ‘Outside the Box’, investing in innovative and interactive live event technologies that will bring the experience of a “live” event into people’s homes. But these go beyond a ‘webinar’ format, rather aiming to bring the experience of being in a theatre, with a front-row view, the ability to engage with the star of the show in real-time, the opportunity to partake in a live Q&A, an audience-wide group chat for rational discussion and debate, and the opportunity to connect with like-minded people through one-on-one networking or to meet & greet the star in a personal online group setting.

“During these trying times of social distancing and isolation, I realise just how important it is to stay engaged and stimulated,” says Owner and Director of Think Inc., Suzi Jamil. “That’s why I’m so excited to still be giving people the chance to engage in intellectual discussions, and engage with their favourite intellectuals– we’re just doing it in a new, and even more interactive way.”

Technology Futurist, Geopolitics Specialist, and Sci-Fi Novelist Dr Jamie Metzl is the guest for the show on Sunday 26 April, titled ‘Hacking the Coronavirus: The Future of Our World’.

A highly sought-out expert with exceptional insight into a diverse range of topics, Jamie is an influential thought-leader in areas as varied as human genome editing, extending our lifespans, the ethics of our technology and its advancement, and the incredible applications of virtual reality. His impactful and storied career has led Jamie to advise the World Health Organization, the U.S. National Security Council, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the United Nations.

Jamie’s most fascinating experience lies in unlocking human potential. What’s on the table? A lot: CRISPR, genetic engineering, human enhancement, microbiology, bioethics. Will we be able to digitise and upload our consciousness to the cloud? And, from his 2019 book Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity, Jamie will cover how genetic engineering is set to revolutionise the core foundations of our lives — sex, war, love, and death.

The event will be hosted by Toby Walsh, Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of New South Wales and Data61. He is the author of the book 2062: The World that AI Made and he is a strong advocate for limits to ensure AI is used to improve our lives and has been a leading voice in the discussion about autonomous weapons, speaking at the UN in both New York and Geneva on the topic. He is a Fellow of the Australia Academy of Science and recipient of the NSW Premier’s Prize for Excellence in Engineering and ICT.
