Many people dream of travelling into space, but how much do we know about how it all began? NASA, together with Internet Archives and Flickr, has recently launched over half a century of its history in an image archive on The Commons. The photos give visitors a view of how NASA was built, the launches and some of the founders and figureheads of the program.

NASA hopes that the public will participate in the process of uncovering history. Visitors to the site are being encouraged to add to the knowledge behind the photos and help tell their stories. Jon Hornstein, director of the NASA Images Project at the Internet Archive in San Francisco said that this will provide an opportunity for the public to help increased the shared knowledge of NASA.

And if you don’t know much about the history of America’s space program, these photos are sure to help you learn more.
