Nature has often been a source of inspiration in film and literature, but more recently, engineers have gotten into the natural trend, designing robots inspired by wildlife. This development demonstrates how our surrounding environment can influence human innovation and strengthens the interaction between humans and machines.
Airacuda
The Airacuda is a remote-controlled, pneumatically driven fish that swims smoothly and silently through the water. The electronics and pneumatics that control the S-shaped motion of its tail fin are housed inside its watertight head. The structure called Fin Ray Effect demonstrates the interaction between the tail fin and its role as an active structure in the body that allows a fish to utilise the full power of its fin stroke in water.
