Pompeii's guardian: Mount Vesuvius

The still active volcano rises above the Bay of Naples. In 79 AD, an eruption buried the cities of Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. Pliny the Younger gave an account of the catastrophe in a letter to the famous Greek historian Tacitus. Image: ESA/NASA
