Idolomantis diabolica nymph

Picture 2 of 6

There are around 2200 mantis species around the world. They are generally all predatory, and catch and hold insects securely in their long, spiked forelegs. Usually mantises protect themselves by camouflage, but if directly threatened they will stand tall and sometimes strike and pinch aggressively with their forelegs. Pictured is an orange spotted Idolomantis diabolica nymph. Image: Cathy Keifer
