Tasmian Devil
Picture 5 of 8
The world's largest surviving marsupial, Sarcophilus harrisii, occurred in mainland Australia more than 400 years ago, but prior to European settlement it became extinct in the area. They survived in Tasmania, where they were considered a nuisance because they feed on carcasses and emit high-pitched, eerie noises. Over the past 10 years, the population has declined considerably because of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease. Image: Shutterstock.
