The Cuban Solenodon

Picture 6 of 7

The Cuban Solenodon was believed to be extinct in 1970, since no specimens had been found since 1890. Three were captured in 1974 and 1975, but it is still rare- the most recent sighting was 2003 and, prior to that, 1999. Image: Shutterstock.

A number of animals that have been considered extinct have reappeared in the records, including birds, reptiles, fish and mammals. A study conducted by the University of Queensland in 2010 found that of 187 mammals listed as extinct, 67 had been rediscovered.
