But while Protemnodon fossils have proven fairly common across Australia, they have often been isolated bones, making it hard to separate species and tell them apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">So for the new study, Dr Kerr visited the collections of 14 museums in four countries and studied \u201cjust about every piece of Protemnodon there is\u201d. One previous belief he was able to dispel was that some <span class=\"s3\">or all species were quadrupeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cOur study suggests that this is true of only three or four species, which may have moved something like a quokka or potoroo,\u201d<br \/>\nhe says, \u201cbounding on four legs at times, hopping on two legs at others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">This scenario fits one of the three new species that Dr Kerr and his team have been able to identify, the newly described <em>Protemnodon mamkurra<\/em> \u2013 \u201ca large but thick-boned, robust kangaroo,\u201d says Dr Kerr. \u201cIt may have hopped only rarely, perhaps just when startled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The second new species, <em>Protemnodon dawsonae<\/em>, with fewer fossils, was most likely a mid-speed hopper, something like a swamp wallaby. Kerr, Flinders University)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">But the star discovery is <em>Protemnodon viator<\/em>, a newly-described species which was much bigger, weighing up to 170kg, around twice as much as today\u2019s red kangaroos. It was a long-limbed \u2019roo that could hop fairly quickly and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">By about 40,000 years ago, all Protemnodon were extinct in Australia, maybe lingering a while longer in New Guinea and Tasmania. Yet for reasons unclear, the same did not happen to many similar animals, such as wallaroos and <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceillustrated.com.au\/blog\/nature\/do-kangaroos-form-longterm-relationships\/\">grey kangaroos<\/a>.
