{"id":8800,"date":"2021-04-21T12:08:43","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T02:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scienceillustrated.com.au\/blog\/?p=8800"},"modified":"2021-04-21T12:09:50","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T02:09:50","slug":"australias-new-leader-in-botanical-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceillustrated.com.au\/blog\/video\/australias-new-leader-in-botanical-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s new leader in botanical science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Global Launch of the Australian Institute of Botanical Science\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/367b63f3OnA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia has a new scientific institute that brings together an astoundingly broad sweep of botanic research organisations and collections, services and facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Australian Institute of Botanical Science<\/strong> is positioned to become a world leader in plant science, in particular established to drive effective conservation solutions &#8211; ensuring the survival of plants, and all life that depends on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission statement also includes a significant recognition of indigenous knowledge, saying that \u201cWe recognise that our understanding of plants and their environment is informed by thousands of years of knowledge generated by First Nation\u2019s people in plant taxonomy, ecology and ecosystem engineering in order to sustainably manage the landscapes of Australia. Our aim is to generate science that will continue this connection with country and to work in partnership with First Nation people to promote a broader appreciation of Australia\u2019s unique flora.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Institute combines the Institute of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, including the living collections at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah, the National Herbarium of NSW, the Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience, the Australian PlantBank, the Centre for Education and Engagement, and the historic Daniel Solander Library.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A launch video explains the new engage with partners across Australia and globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we are to tackle the critical environmental challenges the world currently faces, we must do so through collaboration with likeminded institutions, focusing on innovative scientific research and engagement,\u201d Ms Ora said. \u201cBotanic gardens have a responsibility to lead, encourage, and contribute to research into climate change, particularly relating to plants and their habitats \u2013 and that\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re aiming to do with the establishment of the Australian Institute of Botanical Science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs fires, droughts and other devastating events in Australia have exemplified, protecting
