Image: Shutterstock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The invention that\u00a0revolutionised\u00a0an industry.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sony released the Walkman portable cassette player in July 1979, introducing us to the strange pleasure of private listening in public places.<\/p>\n<p>The D-50, Sony&#8217;s first portable CD player, emerged in November 1984 and was soon nicknamed the Discman.<\/p>\n<p>The first digital music players appeared in 1998, but most had complex interfaces and limited storage capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The Personal Jukebox, an oversized, expensive digital music device released in 1999, spurred the iPod&#8217;s development because it used MP3 files.<\/p>\n<p>The iPod was not invented by a single person, but by a team of engineers and designers who worked in total secrecy for Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, digital product engineer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Fadell\">Anthony Fadell<\/a> shaped early iPod prototypes by smashing fishing weights with a sledgehammer.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/pr\/bios\/philip-w-schiller.html\">Phil Schiller <\/a>thought up the iPod&#8217;s iconic scroll wheel: &#8220;You can&#8217;t hit the plus button a thousand times &#8220;\u00a6 why not just go around?&#8221;\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Vinnie Chieco, the man credited with coining the name &#8220;\u02dciPod&#8217;, was inspired by a quote from\u00a0Kubrick&#8217;s masterpiece <em>A Space Odyssey 2001<\/em>: &#8220;Open the Pod Bay door, Hal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2001 Space Odyessy  Hal wont open the pod bay doors..original footage and audio\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9W5Am-a_xWw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; it had 5GB of storage and boasted it could fit &#8220;1,000 songs in your pocket&#8221;\u009d<\/p>\n<p>In 2001 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/leadership\/Pages\/bill-gates.aspx\">Bill Gates<\/a> was unconcerned about the iPod, dismissing it because it only worked with Apple Computers.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2002, Apple shocked the IT industry by announcing the iPod was now compatible with Windows.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2003 Apple sold their first million iPods; by September 2010 Apple had sold 275 million.<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks Apple will hold a press conference to announce their fall 2011 line-up. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2011\/08\/12\/apple-to-hold-media-event-on-september-8th-2011\/\">Rumor<\/a> has it there will be a new generation of iPod touch&#8230;
